IEC 60335-2-40 deals with the safety of electric heat pumps. Appliances like sanitary hot water heat pumps, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers are included. They incorporate motor compressors and hydronic fan coil units. The maximum rated voltage for single-phase appliances is 250 V, for all other appliances it is 600 V. IEC 60335-2-40 also covers appliances that are not specifically designed for typical household use but can still pose a potential danger to the public. These appliances are intended for use by non-professionals in settings like shops, light industries, and farms.
The mentioned appliances can be comprised of one or multiple factory-made components. IEC 60335-2-40 includes supplementary heaters or provisions for their separate installation. However, it only covers heaters that are designed as part of the appliance package, with the controls incorporated into the appliance itself.
The text of IEC 60335-2-40:2018 has been approved in Europe as EN IEC 60335-2-40:2023 without any changes.
Please take note of the following:
— Appliances intended for use in vehicles, ships, or aircraft may require additional requirements,
— Appliances that are subjected to pressure may also have additional requirements,
— Many countries have specific additional requirements that are specified by their national health authorities, responsible for labour protection, as well as by national authorities overseeing storage, transportation, building construction, and installations.
IEC 60335-2-40 does not apply to:
— Humidifiers specifically designed for use with heating and cooling equipment (covered by IEC 60335-2-88),
— It also does not cover appliances that are exclusively designed for industrial processing,
— Appliances intended for use in locations with special conditions, such as the presence of corrosive or explosive atmospheres (including dust, vapour, or gas), are not within the scope of this standard.
